Study on Emotional Development of Preschool Age Children

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?

The purpose of this study is to learn how doctors/psychiatrists can tell the difference between preschool children who are having trouble with their moods, emotions, and behaviors that are a part of the normal difficulty of growing up and children who have these problems who may have serious emotional trouble and are in need of professional help.

WHO IS NEEDED?

Children age 3-6 who have no behavioral problems
Children age 3-6 who appear sad or do not have fun in activities and play
Children age 3-6 who are very active or do not follow rules

WHAT IS INVOLVED IF I PARTICIPATE?

Duration: 3 visits over a period of 2 years
 
Tests/Procedures: One parent and his/her child will be asked to participate in a laboratory assessment.
Children will be videotaped talking to two puppets, playing with toys and games with a trained research assistant, and answering questions to test their language skills and general knowledge.
Parent participation will include a trained interviewer asking questions about their child's feelings, emotions, behaviors, and development; how their child gets along at home, in school and with friends; and about any history of mental problems in the family.
Children's saliva sample is taken by sucking on a cotton roll 3 times during the laboratory visit to measure levels of stress hormones that are found in saliva.
 
Risks: Children may find some of the tasks he/she is asked to complete stressful or boring.
Parents may find some of the questions asked personal in nature.
 
Benefits: Parents may learn about their child's emotions, development, and behaviors.
 
Compensation: $100 for first visit
$150 for second visit
$150 for third visit
Children will receive prizes, candy, and a toy
