Why is this Research Important? Research has shown that bipolar disorder can, in fact, be identified in children and adolescents. Few studies of appropriate treatments for children who have bipolar disorder exist. The effectiveness of medications typically used to treat childhood bipolar disorder is still unknown. Childhood bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that can run in families and can be very serious. There is a biological basis for childhood bipolar disorder, and it is considered a major psychiatric disorder. Childhood bipolar disorder is often severe and chronic. Children who suffer from it often have serious difficulties. The disorder can impair every aspect of their daily living including their school work, relationships with friends and family, and home life. Medications are often indicated. Since medication has been used to effectively treat adult bipolar disorder, we want to determine if children can benefit from the medication as well.
