BASIC SENSORIMOTOR BATTERY

The complete description of these tests can be found in the following reference: Brosnan-Watters, G., Wozniak, D. F., Nardi, A., and Olney, J. W. (1996). Acute behavioral effects of MK-801 in the mouse. Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior, 53, 701-711.

Inverted screen

Apparatus and materials: Wire mesh grid (16 squares per 10 cm) on wooden frame (15 x 52 cm) with tape placed around wood (to prevent mouse from climbing on wooden areas of apparatus), timer

Procedure
1. Bring mice to testing room and allow to acclimate for 10-20 minutes.
2. Incline wire mesh grid to a 60o angle (one end of the wire mesh frame should be elevated 47 cm relative to the opposite end).
3. Place mouse in middle of wire mesh grid with its head oriented towards the floor.
4. Start timer and record the amount of time (in sec) the mouse remained on screen OR how long it took. for the mouse to climb to the top of the screen and rest its forepaws on the top of the frame.
5. A maximal score of 60 sec can be obtained for each mouse.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for a total of 3 trials with a 2-4 min intertrial interval.

Platform

Apparatus and materials: Elevated circular platform (1.0 cm thick, 3 cm in diameter, 47 cm from table top or floor), timer

Procedure
1. Bring mouse to testing room and allow to acclimate for 10-20 min.
2. Place mouse on top of circular platform.
3. Record duration of time spent on platform OR amount of time on platform plus any time the animal. spends climbing down the thin pole which supports the platform.
4. Maximal score of 60 sec for each mouse.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for a total of three trials with a 2-4 min intertrial interval.

Ledge

Apparatus and materials: Two pieces of Plexiglas oriented perpendicular to the floor and at right angles to each other (0.75 cm thick, 33 cm high from floor, 51 cm long), timer

Procedure
1. Bring mouse to testing room and allow to acclimate for 10-20 min.
2. Place mouse on one end of the Plexiglas "ledge".
3. Record duration of time spent maintaining balance on ledge without falling.
4. Maximal score of 60 sec for each mouse is assigned if the mouse traversed the length of the ledge and return to the starting place in 60 sec OR if it traversed the entire length of the Plexiglas and climbed into the other piece of Plexiglas.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for a total of three trials with a 2-4 min intertrial interval.

Walking initiation

Apparatus and materials: Smooth black table top with a square (21 cm x 21 cm) outlined by white tape, timer

Procedure
1. Bring mouse to testing room and allow to acclimate for 10-20 min.
2. Place mouse in center of square.
3. Record latency for the mouse to leave the square (all four paws outside of the square).
4. Maximal score of 180 sec for each mouse.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for a total of three trials with a 2-4 min intertrial interval.
