RESEARCH INTERESTS

1) Development and course of alcohol problems and dependence, drug problems and dependence, and other

psychopathology in adolescents and adults, using general population, family, twin and twin-family samples

2) Health services use and costs, comparing alcoholics to non-alcoholics from the general population

3) Psychiatric assessment, including development of diagnostic interviews, screening interviews, computer-assisted interviews, family history assessments, and other related instruments

 

SPECIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

PI on a longitudinal family study of alcoholism, with an over sample of African American families, to investigate 3 major developmental models of alcoholism and determine their applicability to minority families

PI on a project studying Adolescent and young adult offspring of twin fathers with and without drug/alcohol problems, to investigate genetic and environmental interactions for the offspring own development of drug use and problems, and other psychopathology

14 year follow up of 444 participants in the St. Louis ECA, to obtain information about their use and costs of health services, using both self-report (interview) and abstraction of medical records.

11 year follow up study of 753 participants in the St. Louis ECA who were at high risk of alcohol dependence were interviewed, with risk and protective factors obtained at re-interview

Investigator on a multi-site family study of alcohol dependence (COGA), including baseline and follow up interviews with detailed phenotyping and family history information on children, adolescents, and adults from over 1500 families

Administrative Co-Director of the Midwest Alcoholism Research Center, with a focus on the etiology and progression of alcohol problems and dependence in youthful populations

Co-investigator on studies collecting longitudinal data on psychopathology (with an emphasis on alcoholism) in adult Australian twins, their spouses, and offspring

Co-investigator on two offspring-of-alcoholic twins studies to study gene-environment influences on the development of alcoholism

SPECIAL POPULATIONS, DATA SETS AND FACILITIES

All data sets available at the Parc Frontenac building; these include ECA data and follow-up data; COGA family data; adult twin data; adolescent and young adult twin data; adult male Vietnam-era veteran twin data; and offspring of twin data (when data collection is completed)
