JOHN RICE, PH.D.
Professor of Mathematics in Psychiatry

Research Interests

1) Genetic epidemiology of psychiatry disorders, particularly affective disorders and alcoholism.

2) Statistical methodology, particularly logistic regression and survival analysis.

3) Methods for linkage analysis and linkage disequilibrium mapping.

Specific Research Activities

I have focused on the use of covariates in an affective sib pair linkage design to model levels of diagnosis, comorbid disorders, and candidate gene genotypes. I am also involved with SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) genotyping and working on the problem of construction a LD (linkage disequilibrium) map in humans.

I am actively involved in analyses of the genetics of alcoholism, bipolar disorder and nicotine dependence.

Special Research Activities

The Collaborative Depression Study consists of data on approximately 1,000 probands currently being followed for 15-20 years and 2,500 of their first degree relatives who were personally interviewed.

I am Head of the Data Management Committee for COGA (Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism) and have contracts to manage publicly available genetic data for NIMH and NIDA.
