Reference Number: 201108381
The purpose of this study is to test a treatment intervention for preschoolers with symptoms of depression.
Children between the ages of 3 and 6 who are experiencing excessive sadness and/or irritability and their caregiver(s)
Duration: 14 weeks
Tests/Procedures: Pre and Post Treatment Assessments:
A trained interviewer will ask parents about their child's feelings, emotions, behaviors, and development. They will also ask detailed questions about how the child gets along at home, in school, and with friends. We will also ask the parent questions about their own mental health and drug use history. Parents will also be asked to participate in some videotaped tasks with their child. Brief questionnaires about parenting syle, stress, and moods will also be completed. During the child's portion of the assessments, s/he will respond to toys and play games with a research assistant. This includes picking puppets that express feelings similar to their own, looking at pictures of faces, and completing stories.
Risks: Adult and child participants may experience mild psychological distress during the assessment and/or treatment. Boredom is also possible. Children involved in the behavioral intervention may at first show an increase in symptoms. This is expected and is usually a temporary change.
Benefits: You may learn about your child's development, emotions, and behaviors. We also hope that you will experience an improvement in your relationship with our child. In addition, we hope that your child will experience a decrease in depressive and disruptive symptoms and that you will become better able to help your child regulate his/her emotions.
Compensation: All research related assessments and therapy will be provided to you at no cost. You will be compensated $50 ($40 cash and $10 gift certificate for your child) after your completion of the pre treatment and post treatment assessments. If you complete the entire treatment, including both assessments, your total compensation will be $100.
