A Longitudinal MRI Study of Infants at Risk for Autism

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?
The goal of our study of brain development in infants at risk for autism is to increase our understanding of how the brain develops and to look for abnormal patterns of brain growth.
WHO IS NEEDED?
We are looking for siblings of children with autism. We are currently enrolling newborn to 12 month old children who have at least 1 sibling who has been diagnosed with autism.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IF I PARTICIPATE?
Duration: Your participation in this study is expected to last 3 years.
Tests/Procedures: Participants will receive developmental and behavioral assessments, an MRI scan of the brain, screening for Fragile X syndrome, and assistance with referrals for local services.
Risks: There is some risk that the MRI may reveal abnormalities that are of clinical concern. A board-certified neuroradiologist will review all scans for clinical abnormalities and generate feedback that will be available to you. If MRI findings of clinical significance are found, you will be directly contacted and informed of the finding to determine what follow-up may be needed.
Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you as a result of your participating in the study. You will receive a brief report summarizing the results of the neurological, learning, language, and behavioral assessments of your child.
Compensation: You receive $125 for your time upon completing the MRI, psychological testing and questionnaires.
